The Hacienda Nápoles hippos: how many there are and where to see them
In the early 1980s four hippos arrived at Pablo Escobar's ranch. Today they are the largest hippo population outside Africa.
How many hippos there are
A study in the Colombian Academy of Sciences journal estimated 181 to 215 hippos in Colombia, in seven groups. The Nápoles-Doradal group numbered about 117 animals across 8.3 km², the densest in the country. Colombia's environment ministry now cites 200+ in the Magdalena Medio and has declared the species invasive.
Where to see them
The safe way is inside Hacienda Nápoles, at the lakes near Hotel África, especially in the morning. Even the Basic pass covers the wildlife sanctuaries (see 2026 prices). Outside the park, keep your distance. Hippos are extremely dangerous.
To see them at dawn, stay close by. Check hotels near Hacienda Nápoles. For more nature the next day, head to the Río Claro reserve.
