Day trips

Around Doradal and Puerto Triunfo

Beyond Nápoles and Río Claro, the municipality of Puerto Triunfo has riverside villages, waterfalls and conservation projects few visitors see.

On a first visit, start with Hacienda Nápoles and Río Claro; with an extra day, these trips round out the journey (see the 3-day itinerary).

Estación Cocorná and the turtle center

A village that grew around the old Antioquia Railway station on the riverbank. It hosts the River Turtle Conservation Center, a community project that has released about 16,000 Magdalena river turtles (Podocnemis lewyana) in 15 years and now releases around 1,500 a year; releases are part of the visit (El Colombiano). There is also the Bocatoma waterfall (about 25 m / 80 ft), according to the municipality.

Puerto Perales

A Puerto Triunfo village on the Magdalena River, downstream from the Puerto Triunfo riverfront. It sees few tourists; if you go, arrange it with local operators.

San Juan waterfall

A drop of about 15 m (50 ft) on the San Juan creek, in Doradal, with rappelling and hiking (Puerto Triunfo municipality).

Los Colores Ecoparque

A conservation area with hiking, birdwatching and walks through Middle Magdalena forest (El Colombiano). It has its own hotel: read our Los Colores Ecoparque review or look for glamping and cabins in the area.

La Dorada (Caldas)

About 70-76 km away, across the border in Caldas. Not to be confused with Doradal: we explain the difference.
